Canadian Red Cross Helping Tenants After Campbellton Fire

CAMPBELLTON, NB – More than two dozen tenants have been displaced by a late-night fire that destroyed an old three-storey building with 14 apartments in downtown Campbellton, New Brunswick. Tenants of three apartments from adjacent building were also temporarily evacuated due to proximity to smoke and flames from the burning structure. Canadian Red Cross volunteers and staff from Campbellton and Bathurst arranged emergency lodging and meals for 30 people last night.  Tenants of the adjacent building are expected to be allowed back home by this evening. For those displaced from the destroyed building,  the Red Cross team is assessing additional needs such as emergency purchases of clothing and other basic items, as well as providing referrals to other agencies and community organizations for additional support. There were no reports of injuries from the fire on O’Leary Street that began around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
